Shower tip #7 – Loose acrylic liners

First thing first – what is an acrylic liner?

It is the plastic backing that is attached to the wall of your shower. The acrylic liner covers 2 or 3 sides of the shower or bath and protects the wall of your shower from water. This becomes the waterproofing of your shower, it means you don’t need a water proofer for this style of shower.

Second, lets explain how the liner is connected to the shower and the wall – the liner is connected to the wall using shower glue, this glue is designed to hold it to the wall without compromising the integrity of the liner.

In most circumstances the glue holds well but over time it can come loose, What happens then? More often the shower can carry on being used with no issue, the key part of this is the silicone joint. The silicone joint is generally a lot stronger than the glue and when this connection is fully cured its extremely difficult to break. Put simply even if your liner is loose around the walls its unlikely to have detached from the silicone joint.  If it is loose around the bottom of the liner this is a bigger problem that requires your attention (or ours).

If your liner has come loose and it is causing some concern there is a process, we do called a ‘Removal & Reinstall’ where we remove the existing shower doors, acrylic wall lining, assess, remove the old silicone & glue and then reinstall the same enclosure. This a generally gives your shower a new lease of life.

If in doubt, get it checked out.
